Chapter 17: Silver

Elias's POV

I saw the silver before I saw him move.

I stood in the doorway of the room with my palm still on the wall, and the pack had gone so quiet that even I could feel it, a held stillness in the stone under my boots.

Declan had the knife low, and he was looking at Bryn.

She was bare and bleeding from the ear, with the key in her fist.

She did not see the blade, because she was looking at the crowd.

I ran.

Nobody in that corridor could have stopped him, because nobody there wanted to.

He drove the knife at her ribs.

I got between them, and it went into my side below the heart.

I did not hear the sound I made.

I felt the heat and then the cold, and the cold was the worst of it.

Silver does not let a wolf close.

I had healed a forearm gash in minutes three days before, and I knew by the way the cold spread through me that nothing of mine would close this.

Bryn's mouth made my name.

I saw it on her lips, over and over, and I could not hear one of them.

I got my hand on Declan's wrist and twisted until the bone gave.

He dropped the knife.

It rang on the flagstones, and Bryn kicked it away into the dark of the room.

Declan stepped back with his broken wrist against his chest and looked at the pack.

He said something.

I could not read it with his face turned.

Then I saw the wolves around him straighten, one at a time.
