Chapter 14: Mercer Island
"Yes," I said.
It was the first time I'd said it out loud to anyone but Dot and Nate.
My knees went soft on her doorstep.
She caught my elbow with the hand that held the dish towel.
"Come in," she said. "Before you fall down my steps."
Her kitchen was the same kitchen.
Her husband was at the counter in a fleece vest, cutting an apple.
He saw me and put the knife down very carefully.
"What is she doing in this house?"
"Sit down," his wife told him. "She's going to tell us."
So I told them, from the pharmacy run to my mother's navy suit.
The husband's knuckles went white on the counter before I was halfway.
When I finished, he hadn't moved.
"Your sister," he said. "The blond one. She used our hot tub. I told you I didn't like her."
"You did," his wife said.
"I wrote the judge." He looked at me. "Two pages, asking for the maximum."
"I said you were a drunk who should never be near a child again."
"I'd have written the same letter."
