Chapter 20: Out the Front Door

The lobby of Maddox Tower is four stories of marble, and by nine fifteen it was full.

Nurses had come across from the hospital in their scrubs.

Bree stood at the front of them with her arms folded and her badge flipped backwards.

Behind the glass doors a man with a notebook stood next to a photographer, and a van was parked at the curb.

Honora came out of the elevator alone.

Preston walked a pace behind her, and Ronan and I came out of the second car with the board chair.

She crossed the marble with her chin high.

The guard at the desk held out his hand, and she gave him her badge without breaking step.

"Mrs. Lowry!" The reporter was already at the doors. "Is it true the CEO of Maddox Women's Health has been sleeping with a subordinate?"

She stopped.

She turned in the middle of the floor, so that every person in the lobby could see her face.

"I am a widow," she said. "I have watched my husband's company be run for three years by a man who treats it as his private harem. A young woman was sent to his clinic for a medical complaint, and I'm told she did not leave it unharmed."

A murmur went through the nurses.

I stepped out from beside Ronan.

"I'm the young woman," I said.

My voice carried farther than I expected.

"My name is Claire Dunning. I was married to her son. She picked me out of eleven candidates for a reason I can show you."

The reporter's pen stopped.

"She ordered her son never to touch me," I said. "For thirteen months. When I started to shake, she booked me into Ronan Maddox's exam room herself, at 8:50 in the morning, from her own laptop."
