Chapter 24: Nothing Is Broken

"Take off the coat," I said again.

He took it off and hung it on the hook behind the door.

"The vest."

He undid the buttons one at a time, watching me.

"The shirt."

I put the cold disc of the stethoscope on his bare chest, and his whole body jumped.

"Sit on the table, Dr. Maddox."

He sat, and the paper crackled under him.

I stood between his knees and listened.

His heart was loud in the earpieces, fast and hard.

"That's elevated," I said.

"I'm aware."

"Any idea why?"

"A woman is examining me."

"Say more."

"She's wearing a ring I picked." His hands came up to my waist. "And she hasn't touched me yet."

I moved the disc lower, over his ribs, then over his stomach, and watched the muscles flinch.

I put two fingers on his wrist.

"Pulse is one-twenty," I said. "I'm going to need you to lie back."

He lay back on the paper with his arms over his head.

His chest was rising hard.

I took my time with his belt.

I opened it, and the button, and the zip, and I dragged his trousers and his underwear down his thighs until his cock sprang free, thick and flushed and already wet at the tip.

"Fuck," he said. "Claire."

"Patient is responsive."

"Claire."

I wrapped my fist around the base of him and stroked once, slowly, from root to head.

He groaned and his hips came off the table.

"Keep still," I said. "I'm not done."

I bent and took him into my mouth.
