Chapter 20: The Pass
The Kingdom came down into the Pass at noon, ten thousand strong, with the sun on their spears.
At the front rode the Hero, and the Dawnblade burned in his hand.
Kanae had never seen it so bright.
It was gold from hilt to tip, with white fire along the edge.
When the wind blew over it, the heat rolled across the valley and made the grass shiver.
It was her light.
She knew it the way you know your own handwriting.
She stood on the Legion's earthwork with Vorhaan on one side and Ishkra on the other.
The pale ring on her wrist throbbed in time with the blade.
"I'm going out there," she said.
"Not alone."
"Alone."
He turned to look at her, and she saw the argument rise in his face.
She put her hand on his chest.
"You swore," she said, very quietly, "that you would not decide for me."
His jaw worked.
The fury went out of his eyes, slowly, and what was left was something she could not stand to look at for long.
"Four hundred spears on this wall," he said. "The moment he raises that blade at you, they come over."
"I know."
"I'll be at your back."
"I know that, too."
He bent his head and kissed her forehead, once, hard.
Kanae went down the earthwork steps and out into the open ground.
It was a long walk.
The gravel crunched under her boots, and the wind pulled at her white robe.
Ten thousand soldiers watched one small woman cross the dead space between two armies.
