Chapter 23: A Year and a Day
Ten months later, on the last morning of the oath, Himari Kuonji rode up to Hollowgate under a green flag with eleven wagons behind her.
Kanae watched from the tower window with a cup of Ishkra's terrible tea going cold in her hand.
The wagons were heavy, and they rolled slowly over the grey road, and the Legion sentries on the wall counted them aloud.
Himari got down from her horse in the courtyard in a plain travelling coat, with her chestnut hair cut short to her chin.
She looked older.
She looked a good deal calmer.
Kanae came down the stairs to meet her.
"The second payment," Himari said, and she smiled. "Eleven thousand one hundred and four, as the treaty says. My father insisted on the interest."
"I told him once was arithmetic."
"He said that twice was manners."
Ishkra was already at the first wagon with her ledger, counting sacks with her lips moving.
Kanae took Himari's hands.
"How is he?" she said. "The king."
"Smaller. He gave up the crown in spring. My uncle has it now, and he reads the treaties, which is more than anyone expected." Himari hesitated. "I am Aoba's ambassador to the Emberwaste. I volunteered."
"You did?"
"I wanted to see it." She looked up at the black towers. "And I wanted to see you."
