Chapter 9: Fourteen Months Without a Scar
"Heal him," Kanae said.
Ishkra stared at her.
"Lady, he is the enemy's archer. He has put forty arrows into our people."
"He's bleeding on your rug."
"It is not my rug."
"Then it's the Legion's, and you're the quartermaster. Fetch a basin."
Ishkra muttered something in the demon tongue that Kanae was fairly sure was a curse, and went to fetch it.
The archer was twenty-five, thin and sunburned, with a cut across his thigh that had been packed with moss.
He watched Kanae kneel beside him with the expression of a man waiting to be struck.
"I won't tell you anything," he said.
"I didn't ask you to."
She laid her hands on his thigh.
The light flowed out at once, and the wound closed under it with a soft wet sound.
He sat up and stared at his own leg.
Then he stared at her face.
"Kanae," he said slowly. "It glowed."
"I noticed."
"In fourteen months it never did."
"I noticed that too."
He started to laugh.
It wasn't a nice sound.
It turned in the middle into something wet and ragged, and he put the back of his wrist against his mouth.
"The Hero is dying," he said.
Vorhaan, who had been standing silently behind Kanae with his arms folded, took a step forward.
"Explain."
"He's not dying today." The archer wiped his face. "But he's bleeding. For the first time in his life. You don't know what that means."
"I think I do," said Ishkra, setting down the basin.
"No." He looked at Kanae. "You don't, Kanae. I've been with him for fourteen months. I watched a crossbow bolt go through his shoulder at the Red Weir, and he was up the next morning, eating breakfast. He has never had a scar. Not one. We called it the Hero's Grace."
