Chapter 23: The Boss's Chair
By ten o'clock the Holy Rosary hall was empty, and the only light came from the candles on the St. Joseph altar.
The long table stood bare under the paper banners, with crumbs on the cloth.
Ronan turned the key in the hall door and came back down the room.
I sat in my father's chair at the head of the table with my hands on its carved arms.
The oak was warm under my palms.
My father's cushion had a hollow in it, and I sat in the hollow.
"Stop there," I said.
He stopped in the middle of the floor, with the candle light on his beard and his sleeves rolled.
"Say it."
"Say what?" he said.
"What you called me in the bread kitchen."
His mouth moved at one corner.
"Boss," he said.
"Again."
"Boss," he said again.
"Come here. Slowly."
He came the length of the table, one step at a time, with his eyes on me.
I watched him the whole way.
He stopped in front of the chair, close enough that I could smell soap and bread and smoke.
"Kneel," I said.
He went down on his knees on the wooden floor between my feet.
He did not look away.
His hands rested on his thighs, and he waited, as he had waited from the first night, to be told.
"Take off my boots."
He unlaced them, one at a time, and set them beside the chair.
"The jeans."
He undid the button, and he did it slowly, as he had done it on the steel table five months ago.
I lifted my hips from the seat, and he drew the black denim down my legs.
He stopped, and looked at the faint white handprint on the left thigh.
He kissed it.
"Leave it on the floor," I said.
He left it on the floor.
I sat in my father's chair bare from the waist down, with the candle light on my skin and my sweater still on.
"Now this," I said.
I pulled the sweater over my head and dropped it in his lap, and I unhooked my bra and let it fall.
The air of the hall was cool on my breasts, and my nipples tightened.
