Exiled Mate, Future Luna novel · Chapter 23 of 24

Chapter 23: Luna

Nobody on the hill moved while Dalton knelt.

I pulled Rhys's coat closed at my throat and walked over until I stood in front of him.

He didn't look up.

"Stand," I said.

He stood, wincing, with his hand on his ribs.

"On my birthday you walked past me in the yard and my sleeve touched yours," I said. "You knew what it was. You felt the bond hit, same as I did."

"Yes."

"You pinned me against a tree in front of a hundred people and said I was a freak."

"Yes," Dalton said. His voice cracked. "I'm sorry. I..."

"I didn't ask if you were sorry."

I heard how quiet the ring had become.

"Your father told me a hollow girl who names the heir her mate has disturbed this pack," I said. "A boy who throws his mate out in front of that pack has disturbed it more. By the word of the Moonblood, and with the old man's leave, you leave Kippax land before moonrise."

The old man dipped his white head.

Dalton's face went through three expressions and stopped on the last.

"Where?" he said.

"Anywhere that isn't here. Take a duffel. Find out what you're worth with no pin and no patrol."

"Sierra..."

"You've got a duffel and two good legs," I said. "People get a long way on less."

It was a cruel line.

I let it sit there.

He bowed his head.

Then Dalton Kippax turned and walked across the grass, past the knees and the lowered heads, down the long path from the Stone to the gate.
