Chapter 12: The Haitang Room

They listened to it on Shen's sofa, with Tang's phone on the low table between them and neither one willing to touch it.

Wei Chuan's caption said: Three years ago.

Before the clip, before the carpet.

They have always known each other.

The feud was a script.

The recording was short and had a bad, close sound, with glasses clinking in the background.

First there was an older man's voice, thick with wine.

"Sit down, pretty boy. Sing something for the table. Your manager says you'll do whatever we ask."

A pause.

A chair scraped.

Then a different voice, from further off, level and cold.

"He isn't a waiter."

Tang's hands went still on his knees.

"You asked an idol to pour," said the voice.

"Ask him to act and see what you bought. I watched one scene of his in Crossing Lanterns."

"It was better than everything in your film."

"And who are you?" said the investor.

"Nobody who needs it. I don't know him. Ping, my coat," said the cold voice.

The chair again.

A door.

The recording ended.

The living room was silent.

"That's you," said Tang.

"Yes," said Shen.

"Three years ago," said Tang.

"Yes," said Shen.

"The Haitang Room. I was there," said Tang.

Tang's voice had gone odd.

"The man with the wine. The investor," said Tang. "I stood next to his chair for an hour with a bottle in my hand."
