Chapter 12: Rule Three

Leander took the wheel out of my hands, and that was the first mistake.

We had left the Ashcroft house with Helen's cold eyes still on us.

I had the keys.

He said, "Let me," and I gave them over because I was tired.

He drove past the lake house turnoff.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"Somewhere with a lock I trust."

"Rule three. I decide."

"Not tonight."

I turned in the seat. His jaw was set, and he did not look at me.

"Helen has your father and a household that knows what you carry in that tin," he said. "She'll send a car by morning. I'm not putting you where she can find you."

"You don't get to decide that."

"Watch me."

The safehouse was a hunting cabin on the ridge, owned by an old army friend.

He parked, pulled my bag out of the back, and held the door open like it was settled.

I stood in the yard and did not go in.

"You took it away from me," I said. "I commanded forty thousand at my last post, and you took the wheel."

He stared at me, because he had no idea what I meant, and he could hear that I meant it.

"I'll tell you when I can," I said.

"Marin..."

"Every man I ever trusted decided for me and called it protection. I will not be driven anywhere."

"You'd rather I let her kill you?"

"I'd rather you asked."

We were shouting by then. The porch light buzzed overhead.

He crossed the yard in three strides and I hit him in the chest with both fists.
