Chapter 6: The Pillar

I threw a rock at Leander the minute the lake house door closed behind us.

He caught it without looking, and that made me angrier.

"You stood by that pillar," I said.

He put the rock on the hall table, very gently, as if I might want it back.

"The night they threw me out, you stood by that pillar with your hands folded," I said. "You watched Sheldon pull my ring off. You watched my father not look at me. You did nothing."

"Marin."

"Six years you walked that house. You knew every door. And you did nothing."

I had not known how much of it was in me until it came out.

Marin's memory had a picture of him from years ago, holding her umbrella in a storm without being asked. I had been carrying that picture around like it was mine.

"Say it back to me," Leander said. "Say what you thought when you looked at me."

"I thought you'd move."

He nodded slowly.

"Helen had a man at each of my elbows," he said. "I counted them when the doors closed. She'd put them there before the speech started, and I didn't see her do it until I'd already stood still."

"You could have moved anyway."

"If I'd moved, they'd have taken me out in front of two hundred phones, and you'd have had no one at your back at all."
