Chapter 18: The Aunt

"Take that woman out," the Marquis said hoarsely. "She is a thief and a liar."

"She is a witness," said the prefect. "And she stays."

The aunt stood on the boards of the clan hall with the baby cloth at her feet.

She looked at Lingxue.

She looked at the bowls on the altar, still wet, and at the two red drops that had not joined.

Then her knees gave way, and she sat down on the floor.

"It is no use," she said. "I told the girl it was no use. She said the family was blind enough to walk into a wall."

"Aunt!" Lingxue cried.

"Be quiet," the aunt said, without turning. "I am forty-six years old, and I am tired."

The prefect crouched in front of her.

"Tell it plainly. From the start."

The aunt rubbed her face with both hands.

"My sister was wet nurse in this house eighteen years ago," she said. "Nanny Sun. She nursed the Marquis's baby daughter for one month."

Madam Fan made a sound.

"Your Ladyship found her with silver in her sleeve and had her whipped out the gate. She had taken a little, yes. She had also cut the jade pair that hung on the baby's wrapping and kept one half. She said it was owed her."

"She was a thief," said Madam Fan.

"She was poor," said the aunt. "She died last winter, and she left me the half of the jade and the cloth, and a long story about how she might have swapped two babies out of spite."
