Chapter 7: Her Mother's Visit
Madam Fan stepped down from the carriage with a copper hand warmer cradled in both gloves and did not let her slippers touch the snow.
A maid laid a strip of felt on the ground for her.
Two hundred soldiers watched in silence.
She looked at the yard, and the ice, and the chained man on the steps, and her face crumpled.
"Cousin!"
The quartermaster dropped to his knees in his irons.
"Cousin, they have lied about me. A convict has lied about me."
"Of course they have." Madam Fan turned to Shen Zhuo with wet eyes. "Commander, I beg you. My cousin has served the army for twenty years."
"He has been selling the wounded men's medicine for most of a year," Shen Zhuo said.
"I am sure there is some mistake."
"His satchel is on the steps."
"A convict planted it."
"A convict was found with the powder under her mat. A thief girl has confessed who put it there. He is bound for the military court in the capital with an escort of my own men."
Madam Fan's mouth went small.
"You will not even let a family settle this quietly?"
"No."
"I will tell the Marquis."
"Please do," he said.
She looked at him a long moment.
Then she turned and found Ruyun among the washhouse women, and her whole face changed.
It softened until it was nearly the face Ruyun had seen on her at the Lantern Festival when she was seven, buying her a sugar rabbit.
"Ruyun," she said, and held out both arms. "My child. How thin you are."
The soldiers shifted.
Some of them looked away from the little scene, embarrassed for her.
