Chapter 21: The Real Proposal

On Thursday night I worked the desk until eleven, with my badge on and my hair in a clip.

The lobby was full of people checking in from a convention.

At 10:40 the revolving door turned, and Rafferty walked in wearing his worn gray jacket.

It was the first time he had worn it since Sunday dinner.

He didn't carry a tray, and he didn't head for the staff door.

He came straight across the marble to my counter and put both hands flat on it.

"Good evening," I said. "Do you have a reservation?"

"I do."

"Name?"

"Rafferty Cole," he said. "It'll be under my wife."

A bellhop in the corner made a strangled sound.

I looked down so he wouldn't see me laugh.

"I'm afraid I don't see a Rafferty Cole, sir."

"Try Wexley."

"I have a Rafferty Wexley, and he is listed as a very difficult guest."

"That sounds right."

By now the line behind him had gone quiet.

The manager had stepped out of the back office with his headset in his hand.

Two housekeepers stood at the end of the desk, and the broad guard stood against the wall with his arms folded.

Even the convention people had turned.

Rafferty reached under his collar and drew out a thin chain.

On it hung a plain gold band, worn at one edge, the one I'd seen on every night we had spent together.
