Chapter 4: Mrs. Conway Walks In

Poppy Sayer had posted the luncheon on her page that morning, so I knew where to find him.

The Werner Family Foundation spring luncheon, noon, the ballroom of the Neilston Hotel.

"You don't have to go in there," Jerome said.

He had driven me. He parked across the street and kept the engine running.

"He told a policeman he was my husband," I said. "I'd like to hear what he tells a ballroom."

"I can't come in. Not without causing a scene that helps her."

"Then I'll cause it myself."

I was still in my funeral black. I walked past the check-in table with a wet umbrella and nobody stopped me.

The ballroom held about two hundred women in pastel suits at round tables, and a stage with a podium.

A waiter set a plate of salmon in front of a guest and said, "Enjoy your lunch, Mr. Werner."

He said it to the man at the head table.

Gregory.

That was the first time I had ever heard a waiter say his real name.

He sat beside Poppy, in a navy suit, with his hand resting on her chair. His mother sat on his other side, in cream.

Poppy wore pale green and a smile for the cameras. Three phones were already pointed at her.

Gregory stood up and took the microphone.

"I'll be short," he said. "My mother says I'm never short."

The room laughed.

"Poppy, come up here."

She stood, flushed, with both hands over her mouth.

He had a flat blue box in his pocket. He opened it on the podium.

It was a diamond bracelet, a full line of stones.

"I don't say it enough," he said, and his voice cracked in the right place. "You make me better. You make every room I walk into feel like home. This is the first of a lot of things I'm going to give you."
