Chapter 5: No Such Man

The county records office closed at four, and we got there at three-ten.

Jerome stayed in the hall by the water fountain. I went up to the counter alone.

The clerk was a heavy woman in a cardigan with a mug that said World's Okayest Grandma.

"Marriage records," I said. "I need to know if I'm married."

She looked at me over her glasses. "Honey, you'd think you'd know that."

"You'd think."

I slid the license copy across the counter.

She read it, typed something, and read her screen. Then she stopped chewing the gum in her cheek.

"Who's the groom to you?" she said.

"He told me his name was Gregory Conway."

"This says Neil."

"I know what it says."

"Mm." She typed again. Then she turned the monitor a few inches so I could see it. "This license was issued three years ago to Neil Conway. Applicant showed a state ID and filled out the form himself. There's a signature."

"Is it his real signature?"

"It's a signature," she said. "Here's what I don't have. I don't have a Neil Conway with that date of birth, in this county or the state. The ID number belongs to nobody. The Social Security number belongs to nobody either."

My ears were ringing.

"So who did I marry?"

"Hon." She took her glasses off and let them hang on their chain. "You married a name. There's no man behind it. A license issued to a person who doesn't exist can't make a marriage. If you went to a judge tomorrow, he'd call it void from the first day."

I stood at the counter.

For three years, I had been Mrs. Conway to the pharmacy, to my dentist, and to my father.
