Chapter 14: The Books
Candice lived on the second floor of a brick building in Polish Hill, over a tailor's shop.
Cade parked the truck at the corner where he could see the door.
"Ten minutes," he said. "If you're not back, I'm coming up the stairs."
"Don't say stairs."
"Ten minutes."
She opened the door before I knocked.
She had changed out of the white dress into gray sweatpants, and her face was scrubbed bare.
The pink waffle-knit robe lay folded on the arm of her couch.
She saw me look at it.
"I washed it," she said. "I didn't know what else to do with it."
"Take it off the arm and put it in the bag."
She did, with both hands.
The coffee table held a manila folder as thick as a phone book.
"Sit," Candice said.
"I'll stand."
"Then stand." She pushed the folder across the wood. "Those are the taproom's bank statements, the lease and the card bills. I print everything. It was the only part of this job he let me do right."
