Chapter 15: The Drake
The suite at the Drake had a window the size of a wall, and Lake Michigan lay black and silver at the bottom of it.
"Nobody can photograph this room," Carmine said, behind me. "Not from the water, not from the street. Fourteen floors up."
"You checked."
"I checked everything. Take off your coat."
I took off my coat and let it fall on the carpet.
Underneath I wore a black slip dress and the heels I had bought that afternoon on Michigan Avenue with his card.
I had not meant to wear the heels.
I had meant to wear them for exactly this.
He stood in the middle of the suite in a charcoal suit with his jacket open and his tie still knotted.
His gaze went down me slowly, to the heels, and back up.
"Come to the window," he said.
I crossed the room.
The glass was cold when I put my palms against it.
A tall gilt mirror hung on the wall beside it.
In it I could see him come up behind me, and see myself with him.
He did not touch me for a long moment.
He stood close enough that I felt the heat of his chest through the slip.
"Tell me what you want tonight," he said.
"More."
"More than what?"
"More than you've given me," I said. "Whatever you've been holding back. I want it."
His breath stirred my hair.
"Say it plainly."
"Tie me up, Carmine."
I watched him in the mirror.
His eyes went black.
He pulled the belt out of his trousers with one long hiss of leather.
It was black, thick, with a plain silver buckle.
"Hands," he said.
I put my wrists together in front of me.
He wound the belt around them twice, cinched it, and tucked the end through so that it held.
It was snug, and not painful, and I felt the leather against my pulse.
"Is that what you meant?"
"Yes."
"Good."
He lifted my bound hands and set them flat against the glass above my head.
