Chapter 8: The Lake House
The lake house sat on a dune in Michiana Shores.
It had a deck that hung over the sand and a bay window onto Lake Michigan.
Carmine had driven us himself, the next evening, with Teo in a second car behind.
He had not told me where we were going.
He had only said, "Pack a bag, and don't pack much."
I stood on the deck at ten at night in his gray sweater and nothing under it.
The wind off the water was cold and clean.
The sky was thick with stars, and far out on the black lake a single light moved slowly.
Carmine came out with two glasses of red wine and stood next to me.
"It was my father's," he said. "He bought it the year I was born. Gina and I came here every summer."
"It's beautiful."
"I haven't been here since she died."
He handed me a glass.
I held it in both hands and did not drink.
"Why me?" I said.
"You asked me that in the study."
"You gave me a speech about the wine. I want the true answer."
He was quiet for a moment, watching the water.
"Three years ago in March," he said, "the week after your father's funeral, you came to the Sunday table.
You wore a black dress that was too big for you."
I remembered the dress.
