Chapter 16: Caption
Lorrie made a sound.
Wick didn't move at all.
He looked at the photo the way he'd looked at the DQ box in Memphis, very still, very cold.
"Who took this?" he said.
"Network's got a guy." Brice slid into the booth next to Lorrie without being asked. "He's good, right? You can see the scars."
"Get up," Lorrie said.
"In a minute." He tapped the photo. "Here's how it goes. The finale, at Blue River. Sherrie's segment. You stand next to me, you hug me, you say you made a mistake and you're sorry for what you put the family through."
"Or?" I said.
"Or this is the cold open of episode six." He smiled. "Uncle Wick and his nephew's girl, through a motel window. My dad thinks it'll do ten million."
"Your dad's seen this?"
"My dad picked it."
The diner had gone quiet around us.
The team from Tulsa had stopped eating.
The waitress stood by the pie case with the coffeepot in her hand.
"You've got till Friday to sign the segment release," Brice said. He put a pen on the table next to the photo. "Read this one first. I know you don't like to."
I looked at the photo.
At my hands on Wick's back.
At the scars he'd let me see.
Wick's hand came down flat on the table beside it, and Brice flinched.
"Get out of the booth," Wick said, very low.
Brice got out of the booth.
He walked to the door, waved to the room, and the bell rang behind him.
Nobody in the diner said anything for a long moment.
Then the waitress came over and refilled my coffee.
"Honey," she said, "I'd have kicked him somewhere."
Wick was looking at me.
Not at the photo.
At me.
"I'm sorry," he said. "That's mine. I should have checked the curtain."
