I sat in the pickup with the dome light on and watched the whole segment on my phone.
Wick watched it over my shoulder.
Brice turned the pages of my notebook with a clean finger.
"Family recipe," he said to the camera. "My grandfather's notes. We've been cooking from this book since before I was born."
"Your grandfather wrote in pencil?" Wick said to the phone. "He wrote in grease pencil on the wall."
"It's my first season," I said. "Look at the dates in the corner."
The camera pushed in on a page.
Wrapped too early. Bark soft. Try 165, not 150. NEVA, PAY ATTENTION.
"He's cooking from my mistakes," I said.
Then I started laughing, there in a pasture at midnight, and I couldn't stop.
"I wrote that whole book wrong," I said. "That's why I kept it. So I'd remember."
Wick was looking at me with his mouth twitching.
"Then let him cook it at the Ozarks," he said.
The Lake of the Ozarks contest was on a peninsula over the water.
Pontoon boats were tied up along the shore, and the stage was built on a barge.
