The chamberlain found me that afternoon in the old palace workroom, packing my stills.
He was carrying a cushion with a key on it.
"His Majesty offers the free perfumer rooms in the women's wing," he said. "Three rooms. With a fountain."
"Tell His Majesty thank you."
"And?"
"And no."
The chamberlain's mouth opened and shut.
"Nobody says no to a fountain."
"I've got a house."
He looked at Sahar, who was wrapping the last funnel in a rag with her scarred hands.
"I heard it burned," he said, quite kindly for him.
"It did," said Sahar. "We're going to sweep it."
We went down to the lower city at sunset with my kit, two stills and a mule Laleh lent us.
Laleh walked with us and carried nothing, and complained about it the whole way.
She also carried a leather purse she kept hitting me with.
"Your hundred gold," she said. "For a night of sleep. He said to give it to you with interest, so I put in a melon."
"Where's the melon?"
"I ate it."
