Chapter 18: Ruins
"Who told you?"
"My sister. She came home with soot in her ears."
"Go home, Tamir."
"I've got a shovel."
"I can see you've got a shovel. Do you know what to do with it?"
"I dug a hole in the Red Waste in the dark," he said. "I'm told it was adequate."
I folded my arms.
He stood in my doorway with the shovel and didn't come in.
He waited for me to say he could.
I looked at the ash still heaped in the front room.
"The cellar," I said. "Glass. Mind your hands."
He minded his hands for about an hour.
By midnight both of them were bleeding through his sleeves, and he was still filling barrows.
At the second hour after midnight I made him stop.
I sat him on an upturned barrel in the yard and picked glass out of his palms with my tweezers by lamplight.
"Ow," he said.
"Sultan of Qaresh."
"The Sultan of Qaresh says ow."
Sahar came out in her blanket, looked at us, and went back in again.
"I'm not here," she called from inside. "I'm asleep. I can't see anything."
