Chapter 29: The Unsaying

Tamir didn't answer him.

He turned to the chamberlain, who was standing soaked to the skin at the back of the platform.

"You carried two papers up my stairs on a cushion," Tamir said. "Where are they?"

The chamberlain went the color of wet ash.

He reached into his sleeve with a shaking hand and brought them out.

"His Excellency wanted them read at the festival, Majesty. After the signing."

"Give them to me."

He gave them.

Tamir walked down off the platform onto the steps of the basin, into the water.

It came over his ankles, then his knees, cold and loud and running.

He stopped on the third step, where everyone in the square could see him.

Then he knelt down in it.

A sound went through the crowd that I'd never heard before.

It wasn't a gasp. It was more like a whole city taking a step back.

"When I was four months crowned," Tamir said, "I pressed my seal on Nazira Thaleb's death without asking her a single question."

"Before Qaresh, on my knees, I unsay it."

Nobody moved.

"No Sultan has ever unsaid a seal," someone shouted from a window.

"Then the law was wrong," Tamir said. "And I'm the one who hid behind it worst."
