Chapter 30: Courting
The whole square heard me.
Somebody groaned. Somebody laughed. Laleh shouted, "Oh, brother," from the middle of the dancing.
Tamir stayed on his knees in the water.
He didn't look humiliated. He looked like a man waiting to be told the rest.
So I told him.
"You sealed my death in front of a crowd," I said, low, just for him. "You watched me walk from a wall in front of a crowd."
"You unsaid it in front of a crowd, and that was right. That belonged to them."
"This doesn't."
He looked at me for a long moment.
"Then how?"
"Come to my shop," I said. "Like a man. Not a Sultan. Figure out the rest."
He stood up, dripping, and bowed to me.
Then he walked back into the crowd with his wet silk clinging to his legs.
The square cheered him anyway.
