Chapter 20: The Crown
The vote was held at noon, three days after the new moon, and my father's hall had never been so full.
Wolves stood on the benches, on the windowsills, and out the open doors into the harbor wind.
Westpoint stood at the back with their hats in their hands.
I stood alone on the floor in my mother's coat with my father's silver pin in my fist.
The old elder with the cane rose from his bench.
"The seat is empty," he said.
"By the old law, mixed blood, dragon blood and leech blood may not hold it unless the pack votes."
"I will read the law, and then we vote."
"First," I said, "I'll ask you something."
He stopped.
I turned to the benches, and to the wolves along the walls.
"Which of you has read the page the law is written on?"
Nobody answered.
"I did, when I was sixteen. I read the law, and it said a fire burned half the harbor."
"I never read the margin."
"I did," said the old elder.
He lifted the yellowed book from the lectern, and his hands were not steady.
