Chapter 7: The Locket

The door opened behind me, and I didn't turn around.

I stood with my back to him and the locket open in my palm.

"Where did you get this?" I said.

"She gave it to me."

"My mother."

"Yes."

"She was dying when you took it off her neck."

"She was dying when she put it in my hand."

"Same thing."

"It isn't," Caleb said, "and you know it isn't."

I wheeled around.

I had meant to throw the locket at his face.

Instead I stood there with it shaking in my fist.

Tears ran down my cheeks, in the cold office of the man who had stood on my lawn.

"Why would she give it to you?"

"She asked me to keep it for you."

"Why you?"

"Because I was there."

"That's no answer."

"It's the only one I have."

"You're a liar," I said.

"Maybe."

"You're a coward."

"Maybe that too."

"You hide behind a promise and let me stand in your house and think the worst."

"Yes."

"Why do you just say yes?"

"Because you're right," he said, and he took a step toward me.

"I should have found you the first night."

"I should have driven to that cabin and sat on the porch until you came out."

"I didn't, and I have to live with that."

My breath hitched.

I put the locket in my fist so hard the edge cut my skin.

"I hate you."

"I know."

"I want to hurt you."

"Then do it."

I went for him.

It was not a blow.

I shoved him backward into the chair behind the desk, and he sat.

I climbed over him with my knees on either side of his thighs.

My hand was still fisted around my mother's locket.

I kissed him with my teeth.

He tasted like coffee and iron.

His hands came to my hips and stayed there, rough and hot through the flannel.

He said my name against my mouth.
