Chapter 14: The Trailer
The trailer sat at the back of a park in Maumee, behind a row of dead sunflowers.
I knocked at nine on Sunday morning, with the video at four million views in my pocket.
Nothing moved inside.
I knocked again.
"I know it's you," said a thin voice through the door. "I watched you do it on the television."
"Please open it."
"The man who pays my rent told me you'd come."
"Then you know I'm not going to leave."
A long pause, and the lock turned.
She stood in the doorway in the same gray cardigan, with her hands held against her chest.
Up close she was smaller than she had been on the stage.
Her white hair was flat on one side.
"You got tall," she said.
"You got old."
"I got burned," she said, and almost smiled.
The kitchen was one table and two chairs.
On the table stood a plastic pill organizer, a cold cup of tea, and a bowl of oranges.
I sat down because my knees told me to.
