Chapter 10: The Footage
Tiernan's POV
I woke on the sofa with her asleep against my chest, and for a long moment I did not breathe.
Then I remembered I did not have to.
Her hair was across my arm, and her hand lay flat over my sternum, warm through my shirt.
Light was starting to come under the curtain.
I slid out from under her without waking her, laid a blanket over her shoulders, and stood in the middle of the study looking at what I had done.
Four hundred years of family rule, and I had broken my own first term.
I had meant to hold the line.
I had meant to keep my hands to myself, my mouth to myself, my hunger to myself, and I had done none of it.
And that was not the thing keeping me on my feet at dawn.
It was her blood.
It had been in my mouth for the space of one swallow, in the cellar, and I could still taste it.
A wolfless girl has a thin trace of wolf in her, a ghost of the pack she was born to.
Hers was not thin.
It was loud, and full, and awake, a whole wolf, pounding on a closed door.
When I reached for it, nothing answered.
I had gone cold in the cellar and left without a word, because I did not know how to say a thing like that to a woman who had just been told she was empty.
I went to find my grandmother.
She was in the library with the fire banked, still in yesterday's dress.
She had not slept, and neither had I.
"You have the look of a man who has made a mistake," Ottoline said.
"Probably."
"Sit."
I did not sit.
