Chapter 22: Struck From the Accord

Willa's POV

The chair laughed.

It was a short, sharp laugh, and nobody joined it.

"You cannot buy the Accord with a vote, Ottoline."

"I can buy a motion," said Ottoline. "I have held proxy for the Eastern Court for twenty years. Ask them."

An old man in the third tier stood up.

"Proxy confirmed," he said. "The Eastern Court votes with Crowhurst."

Another stood, and another.

They rose in the candlelight one Court at a time.

These were the same people who had watched me Struck on the broadcast a month ago.

When the last one sat down, the chair's red sleeves were shaking.

"This is a mutiny."

"This is a count," said Ottoline. "Clause six comes out of the Accord, and you leave that seat."

She nodded to me.

"Those are the motions. Willa Bellegarde has the floor."

She turned to me.

I had not expected it.

Neither had anyone else.

I walked to the front of the hall with the pack roll in my hand.

My hands were not numb at all.

"I'm the Alpha of the Bellegarde Pack," I said. "I'm speaking for it."

Nobody told me to sit.

"I kept your Accord. I read it forty times in the archive while the pack slept."

I turned a page I did not need to read.

"Clause six hands a wolf with no wolf to your witness for life. It only ever worked because nobody asked what happens when the wolf was there all along."

I looked at the chair.

"Strike it."

The vote was called, swiftly and decisively.
