Chapter 15: What He Gave Up

Conrad called his elders into the hall at noon.

Twenty of them came, the old woman with the stick leading, and they sat at the long table with their faces shut.

I stood against the wall by the door with Nan and Tobin, because I had no seat at that table.

"I have a motion," Conrad said.

He stayed on his feet.

"Twelve years ago my father signed the Northern Treaty with Greywater. Greywater keeps two hundred wolves on our northern wall, and in return Blackmere takes the grey sash at every Gathering. Our vote follows Greywater's."

"We know the treaty," said one of the elders, a heavy man with a white beard.

"Then you know what it means today. Roderick Hartwell has put my name on his house with a pen. He means to stand me beside him on the floor of the Stone Hall, and he means every Blackmere elder to be bound with me."

"We signed no page, Alpha. Why should the ink bind us?"

"Because the treaty does. Every one of you follows Greywater's vote, and the page makes that vote his."

The room went quiet.

"I mean to void it," said Conrad. "Tonight. In front of you."

A chair scraped.

"You'd leave the wall," the heavy man said.

"I would."

"We have ten thousand acres of northern border and eleven hundred wolves between the coast and the Passes. Greywater's two hundred are the only ones who hold the high road."

"I know the numbers."

"Rogues come over that road every winter," said the old woman. "And the hunters, with silver."

"I know that too."

"What do you get?" she said.

It was the question I had been waiting for someone to ask.

"I get nothing," Conrad said.

"Nothing."

"If the treaty is void, Blackmere stands free of Greywater. Our elders may sit in the Stone Hall as strangers to Roderick Hartwell's house. One of you may sponsor a witness against him, and nobody can say that witness speaks for a son-in-law."
