Father Sold Me to an Alpha, So I Signed My Sister's Name novel · Chapter 20 of 24

Chapter 20: Cut the Ink

"Well?" said my father.

Daphne looked at him.

I had seen her look at him a thousand times, with her head tilted and her eyes soft, waiting for the pat on the cheek.

She was not doing that now.

"I didn't see Linnea write it," she said.

"Of course you didn't."

"Because she didn't. I took that ledger out of your study safe myself. It's your handwriting, Dad."

A hiss of whispers went through the ring.

My father's smile cracked.

"Daphne. Be careful."

"I'm done being careful." Her voice shook, and she kept going. "Alphas, I have read the last page. May I?"

"Read it," said the woman in brown.

Daphne took the ledger from the keeper's hands and held it open against her chest with her bandaged arm.

She read it in a small steady voice.

"A date, nine days before the contract. Then: Daphne. Bride price, the south ford and the vote. Paid in full on delivery."

Nobody moved.

"I'm Daphne," she said. "He sold me to Ravenmoor, and he told me I was going to be a Luna."

She turned, and looked at the man in the green coat.

He was staring at the floor.

"You paid him," Daphne said. "You paid for me, and I was never going to be asked."

"Girl," said the Alpha of Ravenmoor, in a rough voice. "I did not know it would be written down."

The woman in brown closed her eyes briefly.

"Go on, child," she said. "What else?"

"He said the contract would keep Alpha Mallory silent. He said it was a clever thing. That's what the whole thing was for. I knew. I'm sorry I knew." She looked straight at me, and her eyes spilled over. "I signed it, Linnea. I smiled when I did it. It's the worst thing I've done."
