Chapter 9: Silver

"Put the tin on the floor, Linnea," my father said.

I held it against my chest.

"You've got a gun in your hand, in my mother's room."

"It's loaded with silver." He tilted his head at Conrad. "I can't use it on you. You're still family, even if you're a thankless one. I'll use it on him."

"I'm not your family," said Conrad.

"You are, by Greywater ink. You just haven't admitted it yet."

He raised the gun.

I did not think.

I threw the tin box underhand to the far side of the room and dived at the desk lamp.

The lamp hit the floor and went out.

The room went black.

The gun went off.

The sound filled the room, and I heard Conrad grunt.

Something heavy fell against the wardrobe.

"Conrad!"

"Window," he said. His voice was thin and strained. "Window, Linnea."

I found his arm in the dark and hauled.

He came up on his feet with his hand pressed to his left side, and I felt the wet heat of blood running through his fingers.

A second shot cracked past my ear and buried itself in the plaster.

I crossed the room in four strides, picked up the tin, and shoved the sash window up with my shoulder.

The porch roof lay a short drop below.

"Go!"

He went out first, and I heard the tiles slide under him.

I put one leg over the sill.

A hand caught my ankle.

It was one of the enforcers, the man with the split lip from the ridge road, his face white with rage.

I kicked him in the nose, and he let go.

I jumped.

The roof was wet and steep, and I slid to the gutter and caught it with one hand.

Conrad had already dropped to the lawn below.
