Chapter 23: The Door
The iron door in the base of the range stood open a hand's width, and white light came through the crack.
It smelled of charcoal and hot oil and cold wet pavement.
It smelled like Koenji.
Riko stood in front of it with the letter in one hand and a jar of Teruko's pickled plums in the other.
Behind her, the kitchen was empty.
The village had gone down the mountain singing, and Daigo had taken one long look at her face and shut himself in the pantry.
Kagiro stood against the far wall with his arms at his sides.
He had not moved since the door lit.
He had not said a word.
"You're not going to ask," said Riko.
"No."
"Not even a little."
"I asked once, in a pantry." The corner of his mouth lifted, and then fell. "I will stand here. You will do as you choose."
She turned her back on him, which was the hardest thing she had done in her life, and pulled the iron door wide.
