Chapter 20: The Vote
Saturday morning the river hadn't started yet.
Every boat in the county had hung flags from bow to stern and was idling downstream of the yard, waiting for its turn at our dock.
The Blessing of the Fleet had happened on our dock for forty years.
The pastor stood at the end of it in a windbreaker over his collar, holding a silver bowl and a sprig of cedar.
The town lined the planks in folding chairs and thermos coffee.
My mother stood on a white-painted float at the left end of the dock, in a camel coat and a wide-brimmed hat.
Three white banners hung over her head with my brother's name on them.
Dixon sat beside her in a folding chair in sunglasses, with his hands between his knees.
He looked as if every sound hurt.
At the right end, forty feet away, was a plain float painted blue.
I stood on it in jeans and my father's old canvas jacket.
Myra leaned on a piling beside me with a coil of dock line over her shoulder.
Boone was at my other side, in civilian clothes, with a hot dog.
