Chapter 6: Warm Wishes

Portia put the place card on the kitchen island, next to his coffee, at seven in the morning.

Malachi looked at it.

"Who added my name to the ninth wedding's guest list?" she asked. "Four days before I chose it."

"What guest list?"

"Margo's office. I called the planner yesterday."

Malachi's face did not change.

His hand did.

It flattened on the marble, and his knuckles went pale around the bandage.

"I didn't know," he said.

"Nine weddings, Malachi. Every one of them had my name on the list before I got there."

"I didn't know."

"I believe that you didn't know," Portia said. "I need to ask what you knew."

He looked at her for a long moment.

"The email," he said.

"Show me."

He took out his phone and scrolled with his thumb.

It took him a while to find it, and when he did, he turned the screen around and slid it across the island.

The message was short.

It came from an address that said mholloway88.

"Dear Ms. Preminger," it began. "As discussed, I am willing to provide the terms of my husband's contract to the press for the sum of forty thousand dollars."

"Warm wishes," it ended. "Portia Halloway."

Portia read it once.

Then she started to laugh.

"This isn't funny," Malachi said.

"It's a little funny."

"Portia."

"Look at my name."

He looked.

"It's spelled with an a. Halloway," she said. "And I've never written 'warm wishes' in my life. I write 'thx.'"
