Chapter 14: Freja's Side

Freja's POV

Nolan knocked at nine that night with a cold paper bag in his hand.

"The pad thai," he said. "We never got to it."

I had been sitting on my kitchen floor for an hour with my back against the dishwasher, trying to decide what to say when he came.

I let him in without saying any of it.

We ate on the couch with the bag open between us and the lamp on low.

The noodles were cold and a little rubbery, and he ate every bite.

"Brooks gave me a copy of the last tape," he said. "I put it in the glovebox and shut the door."

I put my fork down.

"Nolan."

"I'm all right." He wasn't, and he knew I could see it. "I came because I don't want to be in the condo, and because you're the only person I know who won't ask me how I feel."

"How do you feel?"

"You just asked."

"I know," I said. "I'm bad at rules."

He laughed, one short breath through his nose, and put his head back against the cushion.

I watched the pale band on his left finger.

It had been there for two weeks, and it hadn't faded at all.

Then I looked at the ceiling, because I could not keep looking at his hand.

Here is what I had not told him.

On the second day of Couples' Week, a Monday, Brooks Ferrin had come to my office at eight in the morning, alone, with his hands in his pockets.

He had shut the door.

"The woman who's going to be on my arm all week is lying about me," he said. "Your donors are about to watch it. I'd like her husband to know before they do."

"Fiancé," I said.

"Fiancé. He's a decent man. He doesn't know the first thing."
