Chapter 10: Cold Water

Anselm's POV

I came back to myself under three blankets and a heap of hot bricks, and it did nothing.

The cold was in my chest, and it was not leaving.

My bedroom ceiling had a crack in it that I had looked at every night of my childhood.

It was white with frost now.

Ivor was sitting on the end of the bed with his elbows on his knees.

He had not shaved.

"You've been out six hours," he said. "The doctors say it's your heart. The doctors have no idea."

I tried to answer, and my throat would not move.

"Don't," he said. "Blink once for yes."

I blinked.

"Is it the cold?"

I blinked.

"Is it her?"

I looked at him for a long moment, and then I blinked twice, which was what I meant.

No.

It was not her.

I knew exactly what I felt, because I had been lying there for six hours feeling it.

When she was near me, the frost drew back.

When she touched me, it dropped from my chest in sheets, and it had done so in her room, with her hand on me, until I had been warm for the first time in eight years.

When she was angry, it came crashing back.

So the only thing that kept me warm was the woman who had every reason to want me dead.

I could not tell what that made her, or what it made me.

I wanted to tell Ivor.

I could not.

The door opened, and Lord Thrale came in with a physician behind him.

"My dear boy," he said.

He sat down beside the bed and took my wrist, as he had when I was small and had a fever.

His hand was warm and dry, and the pewter ring on it was cold.
