Chapter 21: Between

Jo's POV

Gilles's camp on the Barton River had a porch, a good roof and a bed made of timber from his own mill, and by ten that Friday night I was standing in the middle of the floor between the two largest men in Orleans County.

The Company had met at eight in the engine house.

Gilles had asked me to stand at the front and read the roll aloud in my own voice, and I had.

Then they had sent me out to the truck to wait while they voted on something, and I did not ask what.

I only knew that when Gilles drove me up the river road in the dark, his hand on my knee had not stopped shaking.

Now the woodstove ticked in the corner, and the single lamp threw our shadows on the log wall.

Gilles stood in front of me.

Normand stood behind.

I was between them in nothing but my braid, with two hands at my waist from the front and two at my hips from behind, and my back and my breasts were burning.

"You asked for this," Gilles said.

"I did."

"Say it again."

"I want you both at once," I said.

"The two biggest.

"I want to know what it is to take all of it."

Normand made a low sound against the top of my head.

"Jo," he said.

"I'm a lot."

"Be a lot," I said.

"Both of you.

"I'm not going to break."

Gilles kissed me.

It was slow and deep, and his beard scratched my chin, and his hands slid up my ribs until they met over my sternum.

Normand's mouth landed on my neck from behind.

His hands came around my waist and slid up and cupped my breasts, and I was held in a cage of them, a warm wall of man on both sides.

"Down," I said.

I slid out between them and knelt on the rug in front of the stove.

They stood side by side over me, shirtless, with their jeans open, and I looked up the length of both of them.

I took Gilles in my right hand and Normand in my left.

My fingers did not close on either.

The two of them together were bigger than anything I had ever seen, and I wanted to laugh and cry.
