Chapter 10: LT Holdings

Leah's POV

Alec knocked on my door at seven on Tuesday morning, forty-three hours after he left.

I know because I had counted.

I opened the door in a sweatshirt and bare feet, and he stood on the landing with a gray box under one arm and a stack of paper clipped together under the other.

He hadn't shaved.

He looked like he hadn't sat down since the red-eye.

"You said forty-eight," I said.

"I'm early. I'd like to start the clock myself." He held up the box. "May I come in? I'll pay for the hour."

"Just come in."

He stood in the middle of my borrowed living room with his coat on.

The sofa bed was still folded out.

He put the box on the kitchen table, and took the stack of paper and set it in front of me, squared at the edges.

"There was no Brandt closing," he said.

"I figured that out when you left your dinner."

"There was one in March. Not the day of the funeral." His voice was rough. "Desmond has been billing the Brandt account for every date on your calendar for six years. Two hundred and twelve entries. Every dinner, every visit to your parents."

I sat down.

"He made them up."

"He made them up and charged them to a client who didn't know. He used them to take my hours before they could be yours." He swallowed. "And I let him. I never asked why a man I trusted wanted my time that badly."
