Chapter 5: The One Who Didn't Sign
He was sitting on the stone post beside the tilted gate when my carriage rolled up.
He stood as soon as he saw me.
He had no coat and no bag, which for a healer was strange.
"Miss Westermark," he said.
"You're on my property," I said. "Say what you came to say."
"I didn't sign the petition."
"I noticed."
"I couldn't pick up the pen." He swallowed. "I tried. My hand wouldn't close on it."
I stepped past him and the gate swung open under my palm.
He followed me up the lane, a pace behind.
In the front room I lit the lamp and did not offer him a chair.
"My head is quiet," he said.
"What does that mean?"
"For two years it has been loud. Full of noise, and a pull toward your sister, and a dull sick feeling whenever you came near." He stopped. "Since the temple it is quiet. I can see my own days clearly, one after another, and I remember every one."
"Good," I said. "Remember them."
"I remember the way I stood in the doorway while the others laughed at you."
"I remember it too."
"I remember the dinners you cooked that none of us touched."
"Nolan ate some."
"Nolan ate it in the pantry, so nobody would see."
I almost smiled, and I stopped myself.
"You want forgiveness," I said. "I don't have any."
He took that without moving.
"In the temple," I said, "Ronan said he'd take her to bed while I watched. You knelt next to him. Did you agree?"
"I said nothing."
"That's agreeing."
