Chapter 19: Who's My Dad

The church kitchen had a steel counter, a sink full of coffee cups and a stool nobody had needed for years.

Milo sat on it with his boots swinging, and his hand did not leave mine.

Bryce had taken Zoey to the far end of the hall to sit with her.

That left the four of us and the hum of the walk-in cooler.

The children's mother crouched in front of the stool.

She had been crouching there for a full minute and had not found the first word.

"Mom," Milo said. "Are you gonna tell me or not?"

"I am. I'm trying to say it right."

"There isn't a right way. Zoey says you just say it."

She laughed, and it turned into something wet.

Emmett stood at the end of the counter with his hands pushed into his pockets.

He caught my eye.

I nodded at him, once.

He took his hands out and came around the counter and sat on an upturned milk crate so his head was lower than Milo's.

"Milo," he said. "I want to tell you something, and I'm going to say it the way I'd tell you about a keel."

"Okay."

"I'm your father."

Milo looked at him.

"Bryce is your dad," Emmett said. "He's the one who raised you, and I'm not taking that off him. But I'm the one who made you, with your mother. We were going to be a family, and my mother lied to me, and I was told you had never been born."
