Chapter 10: Lacey at the Door

Lacey stepped across the threshold of Emmett's apartment without waiting to be asked in.

"They're still warm," she said, and set the plate on his table, between my bowl and his. "Snickerdoodles. I made a double batch."

Nobody touched them.

"Lacey," I said. "It's ten at night."

"I know, and I'm so sorry. I couldn't sleep. I've been lying there thinking about how I hurt you."

Her voice shook just enough.

Behind her, the landing creaked.

Chad had come out of 3B in his socks, and Zelda was behind him with her hand on his sleeve.

Neither of them came closer than the doormat.

Lacey had a witness for every word.

I understood that, and I understood that it was deliberate.

"I want to say it in front of everyone," she said, and she put one hand over her heart. "Hannah, I made a mess. I repeated something I should have asked you about first. I'm so sorry."

It was a good apology.

It was a very good apology.

It was exactly the one I would have written for her, if I'd been trying to make myself say fine.

"Thank you," I said.

"And Emmett." She turned to him with her whole face open. "I wanted you to know how much we've appreciated you. Everything you did for Hannah's radiator. She hasn't stopped talking about it."

"I haven't," I said.

"Oh, you know what I mean."

"I really don't."
