Chapter 22: Cashier's Check
Evan stood on the sidewalk outside my condo, where his text had said he would be.
He had guessed I would come home first.
He was alone at first glance, in a plain gray shirt and cheap shoes, and he held a long white envelope in both hands.
Then I saw Daphne behind him, sitting on the low wall with her arms wrapped around herself.
She wore a diner uniform with a name tag.
It was crooked.
"Wendy," Evan said. "Thank you for coming."
"You texted me from my own street."
"I didn't know where else you'd go."
His eyes were red.
He looked like he had not slept since the gala.
"What's the envelope?"
"It's a cashier's check." He held it out. "Twenty-nine thousand, four hundred eighteen dollars. That's every charge I put on the card in eight months. Your lawyer sent the list."
I opened it and read the number.
It was in my name.
"Where did this come from?"
"My mother." He swallowed. "She remortgaged. She said it's the last thing she's doing for me."
"You let your mother mortgage her house."
"I know."
"Say it."
"I let my mother mortgage her house so I could give back what I stole."
I put the check in my pocket.
"What are you doing for work?"
"I'm washing cars on Independence Boulevard." He tried a smile. "Nobody in hospitality will return my call."
"Is it outside?"
"All day."
"Then you'll find out how it feels," I said. "Next."
Daphne got off the wall.
She came up the sidewalk slowly, holding one hand tight in the other.
