Chapter 6: No More Couch

I texted Lorna one line: Dinner is still on. I'll be home in twenty minutes.

She answered with a thumbs-up.

Margo watched me put on my coat.

"You're going back there."

"If I don't, she cancels the dinner."

"And if you do?"

"Then I sleep under her roof for one more night and everything they say in the dark ends up on my phone."

She pulled a gray fleece blanket off the arm of her couch and pushed it into my hands.

"Take this. It's cold in that house."

"Margo."

"It's a blanket, Caleb. Don't read into it."

It was nearly eleven when I walked in.

The living room lamp was on.

Camille stood by the stairs with one hand on the banister, and her eyes were swollen.

Dexter sat on the arm of the sofa with a drink, his collar open.

"There he is," Dexter said. "The man with the bank app."

"Dex," Camille said.

"No, let him hear it. He made me look like a fool in front of my boss."

"You did that yourself," I said. "I only paid the bill."

He started up off the couch.

Camille stepped between us and put her hand flat on his chest.

"Please. Both of you. Mother says Sunday is too important."

"Then Sunday is important," I said. "Where do I sleep?"

She pressed her lips together.
