Chapter 11: Lunch With Imogen
"Imogen," Leonard said. "You should be in bed."
"I should. But I read a brochure, and it said the Galway air cures everything." She turned her smile on me. "Leah. Would you let me buy you a hot drink? In public, with half the town watching. I think I owe you."
I thought of the term.
I thought of the napkin in Fiona's kitchen and the word no talk of Imogen underlined twice.
But I had not made a rule about her talking to me.
"There's a café on the quay," I said.
Leonard's hand moved at his side, and stopped.
"I'll come."
"Of course you will," said Imogen, and took my arm.
She leaned on me as we walked, lightly, and her cane clicked on the stones.
The café had steamed windows and a counter full of brown bread.
Imogen chose the table by the window, where the whole promenade could see us, and ordered tea for three.
When it came, she pushed a flat parcel across the cloth.
"For you. Open it."
Inside was a scarf of cream cashmere, wrapped in tissue.
"It's too much."
"It's Ireland," said Imogen. "Ireland needs a scarf. I'm sorry about that comment. The one on your video. I've been told I sounded as if I was boasting. I only meant that I was glad."
"It was kind."
"I try. It doesn't always come out that way." She laughed, quietly. "Len, you're doing your face."
"I'm not doing a face."
"You're doing the one where you wait for the sky to fall."
Her voice was warm and rueful, and Leonard looked at his cup.
