Chapter 12: Route 9
The whole café had gone quiet.
A woman at the counter held a scone halfway to her mouth.
Leonard stood in the doorway with the rain behind him and his phone cracked on the stones.
"Give that to me," he said.
"What is Route 9?"
"Leah, please. Not here."
"You wrote it on the tape. You've carried it behind your license. What is it?"
I stood up with the wallet in one hand and the little plastic sleeve in the other.
My voice shook, and I heard it carry across the room.
"My brother died on Route 9. On the third of October. Seven years ago. You know that."
"Yes."
"You know it."
"Yes."
"Since when?"
He closed his eyes.
When he opened them, he looked at the counter and not at me.
"Since the first minute," he said. "Since the night it happened."
The scone landed on the counter.
My legs went, and I gripped the back of the chair.
"Tell me what it is."
"It's the recording from my car. A camera on the dash. It was running."
"From what night?"
"From that night."
"Whose car?"
"Mine."
The word sat between us.
"Were you driving?"
His mouth opened.
He looked across the café at the corridor to the powder room, where a cane had stopped tapping somewhere in the dark.
"It was my car," he said. "I was in it. Those are the facts, and I won't say more of it in a café. I'll tell you in order, when you're ready, all of it. But I won't lie to you about the main thing again. It was my car, Leah, and I was in it, and we left him there."
