Chapter 20: Hang Up, Len
Imogen climbed the three steps to the stage on her cane, and the hall went quiet for her.
She stood beside Danny's photograph with a folded page in her hand.
She did not need it.
"I never had the privilege of knowing Daniel," she said. "But I have known his sister's grief for years."
A woman in the second row put a hand to her chest.
"I've watched her light a candle on this night every year, alone, and I've thought: that is a love nothing can break. Whatever the world says tonight about the man she married, I want her to know that no one in this room is to blame for a tragedy that fell like a stone on all of us."
The camera flashed.
"I loved your brother's memory, Leah," she said, "as I would my own."
She stepped back, and she bowed her head, and the room began to applaud.
I walked up the steps.
I took the microphone from the stand.
My hand was shaking, so I held it with both.
"Thank you, Imogen," I said. "That was a lovely thing to hear."
She smiled at me, sweetly, and settled on the chair Fiona's student had brought.
"I'd like to play something before the music," I said. "It's been in my phone for seven years. I thought it was only noise, and I was told it was only noise. Tonight Fiona has loaned me her speakers, and I'd like you all to hear what my brother's last minute sounded like."
Imogen's smile stayed.
Fiona's thumb went down on the button.
The hall filled with a crackle of road and rain.
