Chapter 20: Noche Buena
The Ledger had been blank for forty days.
Since the Mall, the map in my window had shown Miami-Dade as a smooth gray shape with no flags on it.
I took it for a gift, and I took the gift for a rest, and neither was a good habit.
The box from Baptiste sat on the top shelf of the pantry over the flour.
Abuela had said Después on November 18, and she had added a rule that nobody reads anything at the table until after Noche Buena.
I am nineteen, and I obeyed her.
The Form G-1 deadline had come and gone on December 18.
A letter from the Justice Department arrived on the twenty-second, saying that a court date would follow the holidays.
On Thursday, December 24, the bakery served two hundred.
Noche Buena at La Caridad has been a street party since 1984.
My grandmother closes the ventanita at four, pushes the tables out onto Palm Avenue, and feeds everyone who comes.
That year the Gate Watch brought a pig.
It cooked in a caja china in the parking lot, a plywood box with a tray of charcoal on the lid.
It had been in there since eleven that morning.
Ninety people stood around it with paper plates.
Crandall had come up from the Trail with twenty of his Guard and a canned ham.
Abuela put the ham on the table without comment, between the yuca and the black beans.
The menu was forty pounds of beans, fourteen trays of yuca and the pig, and she had written it on a receipt in October.
